It has been several weeks since my last posting…December was indeed a busy month. Hopefully everyone had a restful holiday and is looking forward to a wonderful new year.
As promised, I wanted to give an update to the non-profit I was involved in earlier this fall, Room Service Atlanta, which is an organization that pairs local designers with a local shelter each year to create inspiring, relaxing and functional interiors for homeless individuals or individuals (young and young at heart) in transition.
This year 17 designers from the Atlanta, GA area gave their time and talents to add color, furniture and flair to the United Methodist Children’s Home (UMCH) Independent Living Program in Decatur, Georgia. All rooms within the Independent Living Program were renovated/updated and reworked to welcome the young adults into their space by late November 2012.

The space I had to renovate was previously called the “quiet room”, which measured 8’x8′ with a 10′ ceiling. The floor and walls were 100% carpeted – and the space did not have a window (see image). The carpet was removed from the walls and floor (yea!!!), and the walls and floor were prepped to receive finishes. My intent was to transform the space into a small, optimistic sitting/reading room…

I chose a warm white paint for the walls and ceiling (Shoji White by Sherwin Williams) and a vibrant, energetic carpet tile (Mannington Commercial in Elemental Brights and Elemental Neutrals) for the floor donated by Mannington. Unfortunately, we were not able to get any donated furniture/books/shelving for this space so the furniture, lighting, accessories and books were sourced by the Trimble home and budget (oh, yes, and IKEA) . In the end, the reading room provided a more positive space for resting/sitting and reading books or to quietly contemplate…

100% carpeting…? i can only imagine what inspired that. love the result, wonderful work you guys are doing.
well…we had the tiles left over from a previous job…you can imagine, you get enough of the tile to see what the pattern is going to do and before you know it, you’ve got enough for a small room! 🙂 So I thought it would be perfect for this space… Thanks for visiting!
i was referring to the previous carpeting which covered the walls asylum-style 🙂 easy to see what inspired the new floor, i agree those tiles are perfect!
